Getting a Degree in AB Org

by on July 17, 2010

If you find your wallet short of a couple hundred pesos after RecWeek, welcome to the club. The MVP roofdeck turns into a grab bag of possibilities (and freebies!) as people scramble to and fro, checking out what each org has to offer.

This is where we thrive – the org-anism that commands participation from roughly 80% of the student body. This anthology of orgs may overwhelm and intimidate many who hear it. Why?

You might get sent abroad for conferences or competitions.

You might land your dream internship.

You might find yourself on top of the world (Getting to climb the top five mountains in the Philippines is close enough).

Let’s face it, college isn’t just about excelling in academics but getting the experience needed to survive the outside world and meeting new people in the process.

Hits and misses

It’s not unusual for people to join several orgs with heads-on anticipation, only to drift apart halfway through the semester.

For junior Ken Abante, it was a fruitful experience. “It came to a point where I wasn’t happy anymore with the way I was going. But it has allowed me to grow beyond expectations and give my whole self to my community. It is, all in all, a commitment of service,” he says.

This year, his main commitment is being the Secretary-General of the Council of Organizations of the Ateneo (COA) but continues to be fairly active in Alay Ni Ignacio and the Dorm Ministry Council Choir.

Bibo Reyes, a junior, shares, “Going into college to begin with, I knew I wanted to be in a performing org. I applied to AMP, ACGC and BlueRep but discovered a passion for musical theater that no other thing can match up to.”

By the end of his freshman year, Bibo scored his first lead role in a BlueRep play. “An Ateneo college life isn’t really complete without being active in an extra-curricular avenue,” he adds.
