Youth for the nation

by Angie V. Garcia

Would you pass an offer to go backpacking across the scenic trails of Mt. Sagada? How about witnessing the raw beauty of sunset near Lake Danom?  Or are you the one who would spend the day spelunking in the caves of Sumaguing?

Travelling is often both a source of leisure and a temporary escape from daily routines in the hustle and bustle of the city. For Youth Trip Philippines (YTRiP), a youth-led non-governmental organization, travelling is beyond the usual getaway. It is the foundation of promoting nation development and cultural heritage.

Clare Amador founded this youth travel organization back in 2006, along with a group of friends who shared the same passion of travelling. They were photographers, students, history lovers, and writers who believed that Filipinos should become more active participants in responsible and sustainable tourism.

What makes YTRiP different from other tourism organizations is their theme of ‘voluntourism’. They believe that the best way for Filipinos to truly appreciate their cultural heritage and value their country is to experience it firsthand through travelling.

Targeted towards the youth, YTRiP’s wide variety of travelling packages cater to the adventure traveler dreaming of a rich dose of authentic Filipino culture with budget-friendly prices. Their travel package prices cover everything from transportation costs, meals, lodging, and tour facilitation.

YTRiP’s travel packages are flexible and can accommodate all sorts of adventure travelers. Existing travelling tours include hiking and trekking in mountains, museum visits, culinary excursions, and even marine-related activities.

Previous projects with Ateneo’s Developmental Society include an overnight exposure trip with an indigenous host family in Mt. Negron, Pampanga. Facilitated by members of Tunay na Alyansa ng Bayan Alay sa Katutubo, participants were able to interact with the Aeta community, joining them in hiking and trekking sessions. Socialand cultural discussions were held at the end of the day as well.
