What would you say if I tell you that Tiger Woods’ spirit exists not in one, but two bodies?
Not that he has a long-lost twin, but rather, the world-renowned golf player’s spirit resides in both the bodies of Tiger Woods himself and of a ten-year old girl named of Mia Legaspi. It may sound like a hoax, but Fr. Jaime Bulatao, SJ, the founder of the Department of Psychology in Ateneo, says otherwise.
“She’s a golf player, and she joined a tournament of junior golfers. So, she was sitting down, and what I did was I put the spirit of Tiger Woods into her body, so she went to the golf course, and sure enough, first place, champion,” he says.
Some people would call this paranormal, but for Fr. Bulatao, it’s just natural.
Working with the ‘positive energies’
Aside from the ability to transfer spirits, Fr. Bulatao can communicate with creatures that are normally invisible such as the dead and the dwarves. In one of his experiences, he asked a favor from a dwarf named “Anilaida” to help fix a diamond ring for a family.
“As soon as the [Vargas family] got [home], they put the ring and the diamond in the middle table. Within ten minutes, [the ring and the diamond] disappeared. [When] they came back from lunch, they went up, and on top of the pillow, there was the ring and the diamond put into it, so you can be sure that there were energies at work. And furthermore, there was intelligence. [Anilaida] understood English,” he says.
The psychology professor doesn’t keep his gift to himself. In fact, he allows many of his students to explore the workings of the normally invisible entities to either help them develop their sixth sense or satisfy their curiosity for a bizarre experience.
One of the many things that he taught was kything or the ability to send one’s presence somewhere where he is not physically present.
Another would be the experience to communicate with someone without the use of direct words whether that person is physically present or not. It works in such a way that both you and the person you want to communicate with end up thinking about each other, allowing you both to communicate even with the absence of concrete words.
Lisa, one of the students who Fr. Bulatao had taught, narrated her spiritual encounter with her mom. “Father, in a way, hypnotized me. He made me think of my mom, and she already passed away. At that moment, I really felt she was there, so in a way, I was able to communicate with her,” she says.
In all of these things, Fr. Bulatao talks of the positive energies working around people. These are what make the illusionary occurrences a reality, such as the bending of the fork done only through rubbing its surface. In the same way, these positive energies are capable of telling one about the future or an answer to a yes-or-no question.
“There’s… something else besides us. In the West, they talk of cause and effect. In the East, they talk of synchronicity. I discovered it by accident,” he says.
“I was in Meralco Theatre [when] the people had asked me to do an illustration of hypnosis. While I was there, I hypnotized the whole group. I said, ‘Go up into the ceiling.’ Sure enough, when they were already near the ceiling, I shouted, ‘Be careful of the lights.’ The light [bulb] right then and there burst. So, I call that synchronicity… meaningful events that join together at the same time. Simultaneous,” he adds.
It runs in the family
Jinky Amores, a psychologist and spiritual healer, shares that she had been aware of her psychic abilities since she was 5 years old. It started with a chalk incident at her school. “I was seated near the blackboard and I wanted to move the chalk, so it moved! My teacher freaked out and I was sent to the guidance office for testing and evaluations,” she says.
At first, Jinky was confused by her teacher’s behavior. “I was brought up in a home where it was ok to move objects,” she says. Apparently, the gift of clairvoyance runs on her mother’s side of the family. Through her mother’s guidance, she was able to understand the unusual nature of her powers, and that not everybody was gifted with the ability to see the otherworldly as she was.
Faith plays a major role in Jinky’s psychic practice. A weak faith, she explains, makes one vulnerable to the malevolent actions of evil spirits and so it’s important to develop the right discipline, especially with regards to spirituality, in her job. “When you have so much negative energy inside, it’s like food for them,” she says.
She warns against those who open their third eyes for curiosity’s sake. “You need to ask yourself, ‘Am I ready?’ When you’re dealing with the sixth sense, you won’t just see the good spirits, you’ll be exposed to both the black and the white,” she says.
In the past, she’s had to deal with patients who became crazy or fell into severe depressions as a result of toying with the paranormal. She says, “There was this one patient who was even catatonic. Nawawala yung (He was losing his) sense of reality.”
Jinky says that when she sees dead people, she does not get terrified—rather, she takes photos of them. “Some are very physical like the way you normally see people, except they’re floating. And some are just like a mist. Or a shadow of light. Those ghosts I see that are very physical are the ones very attached to this world. And the ghosts that are very transparent are those who have gone a long time ago.”
Some ghosts, she says, may just want our help. Jinky says, “Some ghosts communicate out of ignorance. They don’t know that they’re dead or they know that they’re dead but they don’t know where to go. I help them the same way I help those in the real world. It takes processing. I let them become aware of what is happening and then work on forgiveness and also on the element of unconditional love and trusting in your God.”
From a psychic’s point of view, it seems that the unseen world is not as different from our own as we think. Deceased souls, like living people, also have their own problems. They need to ask mediums, psychics, and sometimes even regular people for help.
Having these experiences has become a natural part of Jinky’s life. “In Genesis, it says God created men to see the seen and the unseen world. It just so happens I’m given the gift to see the unseen world. And these [spirits], they belong to the unseen world,” she says.
