For the love of the (OrSem) stage: Madel

by on June 25, 2009

madelPeople might recognize her as Tracy Turnblad in the Atlantis Productions’ Hairspray (2008) or the hip-hopping geek in Blue Repertory’s High School Musical (2007).

It’s no coincidence that the roles senior Maria Adela “Madel” Ching play always seem to contain a significant amount of her personality in them. She usually goes for characters that remind her of herself, something which people have warned her against.

Madel, however, simply waves aside the threat of typecasting, and says, “It’s what I really enjoy and it’s something I know I excel in! And syempre (of course), that’s the best way I can make other people happy, through happy characters!”

As an actress, Madel’s infectious cheer and enthusiasm pour into every performance she gives. “You do it to make people happy, make people forget for a while,” Madel says.

For the past two years, Madel had been channeling her brand of charm and cheer onto the freshmen themselves as a TnT. Because she wanted to experience OrSem from a new perspective, she decided to be onstage instead this year.

“As a performer, I know one of my strengths is the energy I give into each and every performance. For OrSem, the freshies need that infectious energy to get them off their butts and go running around for campus tours or to make new friends. And of course, if we provide an environment where they feel welcome and freer to approach someone and meet new people, the better, right?”
